JAPANELEPANTS
is an art series by Marius Black combining his fascination for elephants and Japanese ukiyo-e art. These are originally commissioned pieces in 2014 by a family member used as wedding gifts for the bride and groom’s sponsors.
Marius came up with something very light compared to his previous art style then which are very dark (Masochism) and a bit too surreal (Elepanta) so he combined flowers and the aesthetic of ukiyo-e art along with the animal’s identity in its massive presence to produce something unique and elegant.
He used watercolors, gel pens, color markers, inks and highlighters to produce the 20+ pieces which will later become his staple medium, unbeknownst to him creating one of the predecessors to his most well known series, Manila Ukiyo-E.
