Manila Ukiyo-E artworks by Marius Black

THE CONCEPT
Inspired by the Japanese Ukiyo-E woodblock prints of the Floating World, Manila Ukiyo-E portrays the daily urban life of Filipinos living in Manila. These are hand-painted art prints depicting the hardships and bliss of our fellow citizens who live day to day through their talents and abilities, not giving up their right to exist and still enjoy life here in the Philippines.

THEN

Since printing machines weren’t yet invented in the 17th Century. Ukiyo-e were made pressing dye on paper using different woodblocks. One woodblock equal one color. Therefore the ukiyo-e above took at least 10 woodblocks to make.

NOW

Marius can easily replicate his Manila Ukiyo-e artworks by printing the black outline using laser printers and then hand-painting all the colors. It’s a modernize ukiyo-e method without using any woodblocks.

The Manila Ukiyo-E Process

First I take pictures of people I see in the streets, then I use said photos as reference and I hand draw the outline of the artworks in pencil and then I ink them. After that I scan the line art and print them on watercolor paper. Lastly I hand paint all the colors in, like what one does in a coloring book except I use paint like watercolors, gouache, color markers and other mediums.

And in doing so I can reproduce any artwork in the series
but they are all still considered original artworks
with an affordable price 😀

In this way, I can print more than one copy of the outline of each design and paint / color the artworks individually making each Manila Ukiyo-E artwork being a print and an original piece at the same time 5% print and 95% hand-painted. In other words, a hybrid of both 😃

Different but the same, the same but different.

Below are examples of the artwork “SAWI” in it’s numerous editions, from 2018-2025.
They are all different and yet they are all still the same.

UNLIMITED EDITIONS

With this method it is possible for Marius to repeat almost any painting in the Manila Ukiyo-E series. This gives more people to enjoy an artwork the they feel a connection to or would like to give as a gift even it the 1st edition of the design has already been sold. We call the artworks that can be painted multiple times, “UNLIMITED EDITION” which are labeled with this ⚪ symbol throughout the site.
